Out of the mouths of babes — specifically the children of a small primary school in Western North Carolina — come some wonderfully astute truths. George Wilkins took notes for over thirty years while listening with a sympathetic ear to his students and filing away the best of the excuses sent in by their parents. Classrooms and the social and political climate may have changed since some of these gems were recorded, but their appeal remains universal.
George served as an eighth grade teacher for two years at Hendersonville High School, where he also was the assistant principal. Beginning in 1960, he served for thirty-one years as principal of Bruce Drysdale Elementary School in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
