The Torrance-Banks Family Papers, preserved at the J. Murrey Atkins Library of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, are the basis of Ann Williams’ story of Isabella Torrance and her family. The personal letters, legal documents, and financial records range from the 1700s to after the Civil War, shedding light on everyday life in Mecklenburg County.
The letters themselves have been accurately transcribed with 19th century spellings and idioms, with narrative passages included to create an accurate account of the plantation life of the Torrance, Latta, and Davidson families.
Her research interests began with textiles and costumes, with a practical bent toward their reproduction, and have broadened to include many aspects of early American life, particularly the Carolina Piedmont and its people.
Ann and her husband are the parents of three grown children. They spend much of their free time traveling the countryside to participate in Revolutionary War reenactments, interpreting life as it once was.
