Submission Guidelines

Bright Mountain Books welcomes adult, nonfiction manuscripts with Southern Appalachian or North and South Carolina content. We especially solicit new manuscripts by area writers and will consider relevant self-published or out-of-print books for republication.

Our emphasis is on nonfiction, though we also publish creative nonfiction — i.e., fictionalized histories based on factual events or historical novels with strong factual bases. We do not publish poetry, children's books, textbooks, self-help manuals, religious texts, family histories, or novels not based on true-life experiences.

As a traditional publisher, Bright Mountain Books

• is interested in seeing what you want your book to say, not how you think it should look.


• will convert your words and/or illustrations into a professionally produced book and market it successfully.


• produces books at no cost to the author, who then receives royalties based on sales.


• edits, designs, and typesets in-house, then sends books to be manufactured by quality book printers in the United States.


• offers a contract typical of traditional publishing policies.

Submission Instructions and Policies

If you have a manuscript to submit, please keep these points in mind:

• Manuscripts should be submitted in digital form if possible, preferably on CD-ROM or 3.5" floppy disks, along with a printed version of the first several pages.


• Submissions do not need to conform to a prescribed format.


• If the manuscript exists only in printed form, do not send the entire manuscript. Instead, send only a content outline along with three sample chapters. If we feel that we have a definite interest in publishing your book, we will request the entire manuscript.


• Send only photocopies or printouts of photographs and artwork. Do not send originals.


• Bright Mountain Books, Inc., cannot be held liable for any materials submitted, though we are committed to handling your submissions with care and respect.


• Please include a stamped, self-addressed postcard or envelope so we can acknowledge receipt of your submission.


• At least two readers will evaluate each relevant manuscript, which can take from one day to several weeks, depending on the nature of the submission. Please be patient during our evaluation.


• We will return your manuscript to you only if you supply a postage-paid envelope of suitable size.
